What is an Independent Midwife?
Independent Midwives are fully qualified and registered practitioners who have chosen to work outside of the NHS. They work autonomously and, like other midwives, are responsible for their own actions or omissions. Their practice is tightly governed by strict rules and regulations and like all midwives, have a Supervisor of Midwives who will ensure that their practice is safe, up to date and that all equipment and premises used are tested and inspected.
Most midwives choose to work independently as they feel that it is the only way they can provide true woman-centred care, promoting autonomy and empowerment through information and education. Our aim is to ultimately hand control back to the woman and her family, moving away from being passive recipients of care.
